Tired

I'm not sure if it's from the methotrexate or the training but I'm tired !
Open water swim tonight and the water looks a little rough ! But I need to get used to it just incase it's bad swimming at a race !
Hope I have enough juice to make it through the swim !

Better every day

I guess I've said this before ! Trust your coach and trust your training !
I'm perfect proof that anyone can achieve any goal they put passion and every positive thing they need to succeed !
The only thing I have failed at was nutrition ! I tried and tried but with no luck ! Proper calorie cutting can't be done at this time of year all I can hope for is to cut out the junk and hope to drop 2 lbs a week that will give me 22 getting me in the 250 area but that might even be a long shot !
I will do my best and the best thing for me is bed !!!

This training is getting hard

I try to post every day even if its just a couple words ! It really keeps me on track but now my training hours are getting longer and I'm getting tired and sometimes I just need to sleep but will keep up my end of my bargain to keep things posted its like my training journal !
I was late getting away from work today which made me late for track night so I stopped to help out ! I like to give back to the club the way it gave to me ! I know I have only raced 4 times but I feel like a pro ! LoL

I see brand new people in triathlon and I hope they have the same feeling as me when it comes to this sport because it's a definite life changer! The only thing I feel bad about if the lack of time I don't get to spend with my family, but I'm sure they understand ! My son is liking the water and I hope to get him in a triathlon this summer!

I have so much to say I might have to put into a couple blogs but I should start by commenting on the muskoka weekend !
It was amazing !!! I was lucky enough to have roomed with two amazing individuals who I feel very close to after spending such a great weekend with training on a very difficult course and having a great time doing it! We spent a great amount of time (almost all of it) talking about triathlon also eating lots of food !!!

The bike course was difficult but do able and didn't seem that much harder than riding up north of bowmanville
lots of big hills but equal amount of down hills which was fun !

My swim was great I had 6:30 for 300 m so well within my goals for the swim'
I had a bike of 3:45 of moving time with about 20 mins of stopped time that I won't have in the race

The run was slow but getting faster and more enjoyable!
I could have ran much further but kept within my coaches wishes !! I'm sure he has many more miles in my future !

Not sure how it works

So last Saturday at my race I crapped out Tuesday nights brick I had to walk the last 3.5 km out of 7 tonight I flew on my bike like I slept for 5 days and ran like a leopard for 8.3 km in 1 hour and 10 minutes ! A personal best for me over the last few months !
I thought I'd slip my old brooks beasts on and go for a whirl ! And to my surprise ! Shazzzam I was feeling great!
I will probably never understand what the heck goes on but I hope it happens again!
Also it might be my coaches progressive approach with a 20 km bike first with a run right after adding 1 km on twice a week, I'm now up to 8 and I did the math if he adds 1 km per week I'll be up to 28 km by the time I start taper for ironman 70.3
I have never up till today ever thought I would be ready but that old phrase trust you coach and trust your training is going to pay off!
I do everything my coach says and don't miss a beat ! I'm very proud and lucky to have such a great coach !
Another plus for me today I got approved for the new drug humira today by the insurance company ! It's very expensive but I herd it's going to be great for me !!!

Big weekend coming up

So this is the weekend we go to train at muskoka and see if I have the parts to complete my half ironman.
I'm not sure Wharton expect out of my body but I'm hoping it doesn't let me down! 2 km swim 95 km bike and I'm not sure of my run distance yet but I'm sure it will be around 10 km
Right now I'm just sitting up on lake simcoe helping keep all my tri buddies safe ! Which is a very important job

Revenge

So tonight I had my first brick since the race and I just killed it!
I screamed out numerous times (people must have thought I was nuts)
Where were you on Saturday legs?
I was flying ! Then on to the run I had 7 km to do and the first 4 went good after that I backed out of it a little there was no sense in getting hurt so I walked it in with occasional little runs but mostly a walk !
I think that's what my 70.3 ironman will consist of ! 3 hours of walk run with a heavy on the walk !
I get 8.5 hours to complete it and if I tear up the bike I will be fine to walk it in !
I know I'm not going to break any land speed records but I will do my best to finish in the allotted time!

How to change a tire

Tonight at track night we changed our tires which is a great skill to have when the in thinkable happens and your on the side of the road and your time is slipping away it's good to have the confidence to change that tire !

I have come to terms with my race on Saturday and will not stress anymore I think it was nutrition and race time that did it to me !

I'm focusing on my next race and hitting the hills and training my ass of to have a better outcome for the next race !!!

The day after

So I've had a day after to reflect on yesterday's race and I'm still happy I finished but a little disappointed in my times ! To train all winter and give up so much to have a worse time than last years sprint is a little upsetting !
I set the bar high for the first race and it totally didn't work out for me !
This is were a training journal works out so I can see what I did wrong !
On my brick workouts I come off my bike and blast the first 4 km then have to work for the rest but yesterday I was done within the first five minutes of the bike!
So what did I do wrong ? Was it nutrition ? Was it rest ? I had to make a last minute shoe change but that didn't effect me, did I give to much on the swim ? I don't think so I just swam!

I'm going to start by saying I better get serious about my nutrition if I want to have better times ! I think I also over heated because after every aid station I soaked myself with water and instantly picked up the pace but when that wore off back to walking ?
I only took 1 bottle of water on the bike and needed more but the Gatorade didn't cut it ! So more water is needed.

I really thought I was going to tear up the bike but just couldn't get it going !
Plus I forgot to do up my shoes in transition and had to try to do them up on the bike which was difficult because they were road bike shoes !

The temp was really high and the race started at one pm and I've never even. Trained at that time before so it was interesting to race at that time!

Don't get me wrong about my race I'm very happy ! With the confidence I felt it was a great feeling but I just have to figure out why the bike was so hard !


But on to the next race ! No more worrying about that one !

I also will say between the two race companies the recharge with milk has a better race ! They seemed more organized and there was more help !

All washed up and ready to race

Tomorrow I get to test everything I've worked for !

1 hr 30 mins is my target !

Small problem

My coach always says don't change anything close to race day!
But I have a problem, my shoes broke down yesterday and the don't have any in my size at the store!

I better explain what my shoe problem is!!!! I'm to heavy to run in regular human running shoes! I have tried every type of shoe from a stability to a super stability to motion control to neutral and none have lasted longer than a month!
I bought a pair of discontinued sauconey shadow grid trail 8's they are an ugly looking pair of shoes but built like a tank and I have never run in them but I can't run in the old ones
Yesterdays 6 km took me and hour so it's into the new ones !

I'm going to walk today for a couple km and see how they feel ! Maybe break them in a bit !!!

Tomorrow is going to be an exciting day!

Open water swim (hard)

We arrived at Holmes point beach tonight for our open water swim and let me tell you ! open water can be choppy ! I'm really glad we swam it tonight because it wasn't choppy enough to cancel a race but choppy enough that every stroke was a chore!

I intended to do 10 laps but cut it short at 7 because my shoulder wasn't hurting and didn't want to aggravate it so close to the race ! Now that race season is on the front door I get more sensitive about what and who I come in contact with ! also a healthy hand washing when in public places is a must, no restaurant eating if I can help it and stay away from malls !

We are coming up to race day and I'll give my time I'm looking to hit !

127 mins is what I'd like ! So that's a 14 min swim 35 min bike and 35 min run and both transitions equal 3 min
Thats what I would like lol

Closer to race day!

So here is my plan so far !!!!!! Subject to change ! I am not racing to just complete because if I have trouble completing a sprint I better change my race selection, I'm racing to better my last years sprint time which was 1:37 I know I can shave time on the swim because last year I was a tea toddler so I will change that ! My transition was disgusting I'm hoping to be in and out of T1 in 1:15 seconds then my only hope is the bike ! I need to make up time on the bike ! I'd like to be in the top ten on the bike ! Because the fast runners will be coming !

I know I wont be in last for this race but as the races get longer and the runs get longer I'll be closer to the back ! Today I was very happy with the run it was 5 km and I did it race pace just to test the waters ! Thursday I have one more brick and I plan to blast the bike and just toddle threw the run to avoid any injuries !

Today's heavy winds were a great training tool and I practiced my aero position as I had no choice the wind was so strong it was killing me but I still kept up a good clip !

I took my weekly dose of methotrexate today and I hope the side effects don't wake me up again this week ! I also hope I'm not far off the humira I'd like to give it a try!

Things are looking good

Had a great track night tonight we did some pyramid running then transitioned into bike !!! That's awesome a nice hard bike is the equalizer for us slow people ! I'm the same speed if I bike or not so it's always slow and I practice that on every brick, same pace of the bike and hold !!!!

I have my heart rate set at 155 on the bike and between 150 and 155 on the run I was hovering around 160 today for a while but it took a bit out of me !
I really enjoyed transition training today I think if I can shave off a couple minutes from transition and speed my run up I'm hoping to be in the middle of my age group this time instead 3rd from last!!!

My next two brick workouts will tell the tale! All I have to do is stay healthy for a couple more days and all is good!
Tomorrow is methotrexate day after my ride so I'm not looking forward to it and I'm sure tomorrow's ride is going to be a rough one !

Count down

So it's on !!! Count down to race day ! I can feel the excitement building !!
I wish I could solve my one remaining problem ! TIME ! I need more of it and sleep is starting to be a bit of a factor !
I ran out of time today to get things ready for tomorrow so I will have to get up early and do it also with a full slate of training to do before Saturday this should be an interesting week.

My race starts at 1 pm Saturday which will present a bit of a problem for me with nutrition with this late start and away from home I will have to bring a sandwich or something I will experiment Tuesday and Thursday on my bricks.

I will make a plan up for the weekend and I'll share it to see how close I got !!!

Lake swim/bike brick

Great swim today ! 2.2 km then a real slow transition into a 86.9 km bike ride the one thing I liked about today was white feather farms! Liz, Tara, Peter and myself stopped and had a delicious apple fritter ! It really hit the spot!

I took 2 gels one shot block package and one bar along with the fritter it was great ! I think one more gel would replace the apple fritter !

I had an awesome ride with a little back and neck pain and a sore right foot ! I think I might need a bigger size shoe but will monitor it as I go!

One week today I will be in Guelph competing in a sprint triathlon !! Should be fun! I'm still not sure how I'm going to run the race because it usually takes me 10 km to get hot but I will try and be warm before I start! I think I might go for a twenty km ride before I race lol just to be warm !

Early to bed tonight it's been a long week !

Warming up the engine

I don't have a cadence meter I don't have a speedometer I'm just now training off my heart rate and I think it's working great !

I keep my heart around 155 for maintenance and let it drift up to 170 then if I'm close to the top of the hill I'll push it but if I'm not I back off and hold 170 till the top then recover on the down hill and it seems to be working!

I really hate socks on my bike but will need to wear them to reduce blisters !
My run today was good I was running for 5 and walk for 1 with my heart rate around 145 ! I can keep it there at a 6.5 to a 7.5 km per hour pace which is very slow but steady for a man of 269 lbs!

Very happy with training this week and looking forward to next weekends race and putting together all my pieces !

Open water swim

It was like I never left the lake !
I was a little nervous at first because there was giant balls of algae that looked like big snot balls floating in the water ! But I braved it and away I went!

We had a great turn out 25 swimmers and the water was not to bad of a temperature but the weeds and snot balls were bad !

My shoulders felt much better in the wet suit than not in ! I swam around 1500 m with little pain!

I think the race excitement is starting to sink in I can feel it creeping up! 8 more days !!!

I still haven't decided if I'm going to go in the front or wait and start at the back because I just don't like being stuck in the middle of the pack, I would rather swim threw the pack than get trampled by swimmers that don't look where they go!

I do know once I get on my bike I'm going to have to crank it up because the runners will run me down for sure ! I know I won't become a super runner in 8 days so it will be more like a jog/waddle for me lol

But either way I can't wait !! This is why I've been training all winter !

Tuesday brick day

So today was a twenty km ride transition to a 3 km run and I don't know if it was last nights track night but I sure felt slow!
Slow but I really enjoyed today's training ! It was a great release from a crappy day !
Tomorrow night is my first open water swim and I'm really looking forward to getting out there !! I think I hate the pool as much as the trainer !
Thursday is yet another brick workout ! I'm either going to learn to love them or die trying !!!
Coach Paul puts lots of time into making his athletes plan, I've talked to many of my iron motivation team mates and none are the same ! Intact even us that are doing the same races are different schedules ! That's what I like about coach Paul, he doesn't use a cookie cutter plan !!! Each plan focuses on building my weakness !
I'm sure he's trying to build up my run and burn off some fat ! I love my training plan !

I went to the doctors today to get a TB skin test to make sure I don't have tuberculosis, just one of the requirements for the new drug humira I'm hoping to get on !!! There is a company that probably works for the drug company and they do all the dealings with the benefits and set up nurses to train me to give my own injections ! Yeeee haaaaa more needles !

10 more days till my first race I CAnT WAIT !!

Great track night

Had a great run at track night it was awesome !!! My ankles are a little tender but not near as sore as normal !

I got some dirt in the bearing some how had to get my chain cleaned up but she's good as new !!

Life style changes

I had to go to a jack and Jill for my wife's cousin last night ! They are a super couple with their head screwed on straight, that comes from good parenting something I hope I've done!
I know I could have done things a little different raising my kids but I'm happy with the job we have done! I'm very confident when life throws them a curve or offers up one of its tantalizing addictions they will make the right choices ! I'm not saying there won't be any bumps alone the way but their ship is heading in the right direction !

What the problem I'm having is not only I was an alcoholic and a heavy smoker (which is all behind me) I was able to go out and have a social drink, even to the point of 8 or 10 once or twice a year and not fall victim to the booze again ! Which never often happens ! But now with these meds I can't even safely have a drink !! Now that's still ok BUT I dont even want to go to these functions anymore ! I feel bad for my wife and the people that host these functions
It's something I guess I'll have to get used to !
It's all for the best !
But let me tell you drunk people don't make any sense lol

Cold wet ride

A few scattered showers today with a blustery wind made for a difficult ride !
I left from home today because I will be cycling back from our swim next weekend and wanted to get a route back and yes I found a good hilly one !
Also I go right past. White feather farms do I will be stopping for a apple fritter !

Good news !!!! My body held up for the entire 80 km making this my longest ride to date ! Very happy about it ! Today I went to the gym for a hot tub after and it really helped, also besides a hand full of potato chips I stuck right with my proper nutrition and hydration today!!! I still feel whipped but I think it will help tomorrow!

I also ate alot more today on the ride and I think that was a huge factor in finishing strong !

After a restful afternoon I have to jump in the shower to get ready for my wife's cousins jack and Jill ! I'm not sure how late I will make it but I will give it the old college try !

A little better !

Feeling a little better today only to light up 80 km tomorrow!
I'm going to take it real easy and work back into it slowly
I know I can burn up 80 km when I'm healthy but I still think I'm about 70 % so I'll take it byes it comes !
I'm hoping the wind lays off and gives us a fighting chance or it's going to be a hard ride!

I got my June training plan and I have three swims three runs and three bikes tuesday and Thursday and Monday all consist of bricks and saturday is a swim bike brick, Sunday it's a easy day with a swim, weights.

If I eat correctly over the next couple months I don't think loosing 30 lbs wil be hard !!!
